How to get the best photographs of your kids

I have been doing this whole photog thing for a little while now and I've come across some really awesome families. I've had kids who couldn't step away from the camera and loved it. I've also had kids that just did NOT want their photo taken, whether it be due to the fact that I'm a stranger, or that I have a camera in their face, they could just be really shy or the main reason - the parents. It's sad to say that parents are the main reason I don't get the photographs they were hoping for.
Usually it starts with shy kids, and then the parents become frustrated they spent money on time that is working out to be just the photographer talking to their child. As a parent, I know ALL TO WELL how hard it is when your kid won't look at the photographer and smile nicely. Or even laugh for the camera and all you can think about is money wasted. It is so frustrating! Having two toddlers and limited time along with limited attention spans - my kids have tortured me during photo sessions. So as hard is it to say - I'm totally guilty of causing my own family photo session to go down hill.
I think I'm pretty good with children, it's why I get some great portraits of them. But I get those portraits by gaining the trust of the child, and showing them that they are allowed to be kids and be goofy. As a parent, we all want those great shots of our kiddos sitting still and smiling - but sometimes that is just not who they are. If you want awesome shots, let me do what you pay me for - trust that I'm talking to your kids not to waste your time but to make the time worth it. I want to give you as many shots as I can, but when a parent starts to get frustrated with their kids, it shows on the kid's face. So here are some tips to help you get the most of your time with me...

1. Talk about how fun the photo session will be prior to the session. Talk them up, and let them know what to expect. If you're okay with bribes, bribe them! Let them know if they are good, they get ice cream afterward or get to play on the playground as soon as we're done - but let the reward decision be up to the photographer. If the photographer says they did good, TRUST THAT. They might have been turds to you, because they are your kids, and you know they can behave better, but if I am telling you that they did awesome, that means I'm confident with the shots I got and you should reward them.

2. Try really really really hard to not yell "SMILE SMILE SMILE" at them - instead, make funny faces, give me bunny ears, make weird sounds - try and get them to smile through actions instead of yelling. Or take the cue from the photographer, if they are asking the kid(s) to do something, like saying "cheese," - ask them to say something you know usually makes them smile. Just remember if you're frustrated, they will be too.

3. Try to keep the experience positive! If the parent gets mad and starts saying they lost their treat or bribe mid-session, we might as well end it there. The child will feel like they can no longer recover so why try? Be the example of what you want your children to do in front of the camera :) It's okay to show them how to be a goof and make silly faces - even if it's just to get the smiles that come right after those funny faces.

I can't tell you how many times family shots were just failing because the kids were over powered and felt frustrated and as soon as I took them off alone to get some individualized shots, they would open up and I'd get some of the greatest portraits. Just remember, it's my job to be silly to get kids to open up. Also, some of the best portraits are ones of kids not even smiling. So it's okay to have a frown sometimes.

Photo sessions should be FUN! No one likes forced smiles. There should be moments of total silliness happening, otherwise you aren't getting your money's worth ;)

And finally. RELAX! Let me stress about getting "the shot." If you're in front of the camera, just focus on trying to have fun, and feel good about yourself for taking time to cherish how your family is at this moment and let me worry about the end result. It's what you're paying me for!

It's just going to get busier!

This month has been so crazy busy. Between school for the husband and my son, sessions, doing things as a family and "me time" (if there is such a thing lol) - I haven't had a chance to update my blog as often as I'd like! And the BEST part, things will be getting even more hectic as the month comes to an end. Weddings, family sessions and more maternity - I'll be busy to say the least! Here are a few things I've been up to since my last post.

First I had a maternity session with Janet & Ed. And I can't wait to meet their baby <3 Here are a few of my fav's from their session:

Next I got to head to a baby shower, here are a few from that day...

My next session was up in Portland - my first time seriously traveling for a session. I got to photograph a sweet little baby boy, who did not want to sleep for us at all. But I was able to capture some sweet moments anyway <3

And my most recent session was the winner of my raffle from my Just Between Friends vendor booth back in April. They're using part of their winning session for maternity photos and the other part towards their newborn photographs. I can't wait to meet their baby girl! This month has been full of babies, bellies, and more babies. And there is just SO much more love left to capture this month. I can't wait <3

It's June... what???

Can anyone else not believe that it is June?! Holy cow!! I can't. Well I started my month out great - and  it's just going to get better! With maternity sessions, family photos, baby snuggles, weddings, and baby showers - I couldn't ask for more! Well okay, I can and do because I love it so much and I can't help but be extremely excited that this month is so packed (but hey I do have some availability left, hurry and book before it's gone). So lets take a look at some of my favorites from this month!

First up, Janie and her awesome kids. It took a little bribing for her babies to open up to me, but after meeting me a few times - they're finally opening up to my camera! I love it. Here are a couple of my favs.

Next up is Irene. I received an email from her a few weeks ago and we've been planning out her session for awhile. I am so glad I got her email. Her little family was so sweet. Little Lucy was just a doll and her husband, was SO helpful and carried my props ;) Couldn't have asked for better! And for not having a nap, this 2 year old did fantastic!!

Yay, my blog is up to date!! Woohoo! I hope that as I get busier, I can stay up with this deal! It's getting harder but I will do my best! Good night folks!!

Good thing I'm smart! Plus the rest of May's sessions :)

Okay, so I'm not a genius by any means, but I have backed up every single session that anyone has ever paid me to do. Something I wish I could buck up and do with my own family photos but I just don't want to burn that many discs, lol. Anywho, a week or two ago my computer died. It died a good death, but died. Yay. Not. Well of course, my first thought went to my CLIENTS!! I freaked out. Until I realized that my computer wasn't too dead. Just dead enough beyond repair. So I hooked it up to my T.V. yes, my living room T.V. and transferred all of my photo's, family and client's, over to our external hard drive that has never been used. Thankfully had this not been an option, I still have discs burned of every session I've done thus far, so everyone's files are safe regardless, just so you know. So after 4 hours of transferring over 100 gigs of info onto the hard drive, I then finished up the sessions I had been working on, burned all the next sets of discs and carried on with my day. However, for blogging purposes, I fell behind and I apologize. Life is crazy, busy, and chaotic. Which is a good thing, I need to stay busy right now. But I just wanted to share some updates :) Here are a few of the sessions I got to finish up! 

First up. Caitlin & Josh. I must say, I am soooo sad they are getting married in Hawaii, without me! They are adorable, and so in love. It's just so obvious, it makes my job easy. I wish I could be there sooooo bad! Here are a few photo's from their beautiful engagement session....

Next up is Amber, she just had a beautiful baby boy and I was honored to capture some precious moments for her. Here are a few of my favorites!

The end of May was beautiful and awesome. I'm so glad I got to meet the new people I did and I hope they continue to grace my life :) 

Kayla & Richard

I think one of my new favorite types of sessions to do, is engagement. The love between two people is just so amazing to capture. I can't compare it to anything else I've been able to do. I was blessed to be messaged by Kayla as she was looking for just some quick shots of her and her man for to celebrate their engagement. The session was originally scheduled for the end of May but with wedding plans quickly changing, we moved it up and I'm so glad we did. What a beautiful (and windy) night to get creative with props and to show off some cute lovey-kisses. Here are a few of my favorites from their session, please enjoy them as much as I do!

My May so far... :D

This month has been great so far. I've already done a few sessions and have most of my weekends booked! I couldn't be happier to be so busy :) Here are a few from some of the sessions I've gotten to do so far.

First was Dallas, a sweet little boy who did not want to go to sleep! But after much snuggles and lots of rocking he finally fell asleep. Here are a couple from his big day :)

And my last session so far this month was Tanesha and her awesome family. She's getting married to her man next month! So this last minute quick session was extra special. A good mix of engagement and family. Here are a couple I adore:

Giveaway Winner - Brittany

Brittany won one of my last Random Number Giveaways, and she used it to have some family pictures taken. I am so glad to have met her, she was such a sweetie and her family was gorgeous. Beautiful ending to my day, that's for sure! Here are a couple of my favorites from her session.

During the midst of my Mini Sessions, I was contacted by Katie to get in a quick late evening session with her kids! I was happy to oblige :) I got some awesome shots of her and her babies and she definitely deserved her own post! Loved her session and I'm happy to say she did too!
